Welcome to the µInternet Workshop

In this workshop you will work together in small groups to run a router for your own AS, peer with other AS to achieve reachability with each other and the whole Internet.

Warning

When setting up your pods and establish connectivity, they will become reachable from the Internet all over the world. Please keep this in mind when connecting your personal equipment. For security reasons, the carriers providing the Internet transit have the following stateless filters engaged:

inbound

  • permit HTTP (80/tcp) and HTTPS (443/tcp)
  • permit UDP & TCP ephemeral ports (32768-65535)
  • permit ICMP and ICMPv6
  • deny any other traffic

outbound

  • deny SMTP (25/tcp)
  • allow any other traffic

Software Stack

The routers are Linux-based using the following software stack:

Building Teams

Please team up in groups of two people. We have three different types of pods, each operated by a single team:

As an organisation you will operate an AS with:

  • private peerings to another ORG and IX
  • transit peerings from ISP

Your mission is:

  • to setup private peerings to other AS based on dedicated links and joining IXPs
  • to get transit redundancy with two ISPs

Tip

This is the least challenging pod type and recommended for beginners.

As an ISP you will operate an AS with:

  • private peerings to other orgs, ISPs and IXs
  • transit peerings from other ISPs and the workshop carriers

Your mission is:

  • to get transit redundancy so you and your customer's ASN have transit via both carriers
  • to get transit redundancy with two ISPs
  • to setup private peerings to other AS with dedicated links or joining IXPs

As an IX you will operate up to two AS:

  • an AS for the route servers for your IXP
  • an AS for the management of your IX ORG

Your mission is:

  • to provide a neutral peering platform for your peers
  • to run a route server to ease the peering setup for your peers
  • to operate your management AS

Warning

That is the most challenging pod type and recommended for more experienced attendees.
